Fire Extinguisher Testing Scotland
British Standard 5306 Part 3 requires an annual inspection of fire extinguishers by a qualified individual. Similar to how your car needs an oil change, but with the added legal obligation and severe penalties of fire extinguisher servicing

For normal UK portable fire extinguishers, servicing parts include anti-tamper seals, safety pins, labels, o-rings, gauge tests, CO2 swivel horns, CO2 hose, and horns.
Inquiring about the company’s specialist fire protection efficacy insurance coverage may also be worthwhile. In the event that the equipment they deem fit for use does not, in fact, function as intended and you incur financial loss, this will allow the company to cover the cost of the damage. For fire safety equipment, standard product liability insurance does not cover this.

Pressure testing, periodic discharge testing, and extended service
In addition to routine annual maintenance, extinguishers need to be discharge tested every few years (about every five years for water, foam, and powder, and every ten years for CO2) to make sure they function properly and are in good condition internally.
Type of extinguisher | Basic service | Extended service | Overhaul |
---|---|---|---|
Water and water-additive | 12-monthly | Every 5 years | —- |
Foam | 12-monthly | Every 5 years | —- |
Powder | 12-monthly | Every 5 years | —- |
CO2 | 12-monthly | —- | Every 10 years |
Wet chemical | 12-monthly | Every 5 years | —- |
They can be filled locally with water and AFFF foam. Powder will be too filthy for this, and specialised hydraulic testing of CO2 extinguishers must be done in a workshop. Instead of discharging in-situ, the technician will typically substitute them for ones that have been factory tested.
Please be aware that we frequently change these with new ones because they cost less to buy new than to refill or test. Additionally, given that the extinguisher is already five years old, it is conceivable to pay for the test and refill this year only for it to need replacement the following year if it fails the service.

Offering a Service
Each fire extinguisher needs a first check when it is taken out of the box; this is known as a commissioning service in British Standard 5306 part 3. After delivery, it should be completed by a qualified individual there. The present Fire Regulations (Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005) state that a complete risk assessment is necessary before the extinguisher can be used, and that failure to have it commissioned by a certified technician on site may result in the cancellation of fire insurance coverage.
Be wary of businesses who offer to “certify” or “commission” an extinguisher before delivery. This is unacceptable since the delivery could result in harm to the item. Additionally, placing in the appropriate site and determining compatibility for the location are included in the commissioning service.
Service for Installation
All extinguishers must be permanently placed in place. Those with 3 kg or 3 litres or more of content should be wall-mounted with the handles one metre off the ground. This includes the typical 2 kg CO2 extinguisher as well. Smaller ones must be mounted so that handles are 1.5 metres above the ground.
A appropriate wall mounting bracket for our new extinguishers is included in the box. All UK models feature the identical fitting bracket holder on the back of the extinguisher, which is welded to the body. CO2 extinguishers have a little hole near the handles on the rear of the brass valve.
If you want to move the extinguishers, consider using straps and brackets for extra stability. The majority of 1kg and 2kg powders will include a wire clip bracket that is appropriate for travel.
This might not always be feasible given how many of our modern stores and offices have glass walls or large stretches of it. A fire extinguisher stand would be appropriate in the situation.
Inspections every month
The “responsible person” (the person in charge of the fire safety apparatus at the location or in the risky area) is obligated to visually inspect the apparatus at least once each month to check for the following:
- Each extinguisher is placed in its proper location.
- Every extinguisher is open and clearly visible.
- Each extinguisher’s operation instructions are clearly visible and face outwards.
- Each extinguisher has not been used, and there are no evident signs of damage or missing parts.
- The pressure indication or gauge is accurate for the given pressure range.
- Each extinguisher’s tamper seals or OK indicators are intact and in place.
A fire log book should be used to record the findings of these visual inspections, and any necessary corrective action should be scheduled. In cases of uncertainty, the person in charge should make arrangements for an expert (a qualified extinguisher technician) to inspect the extinguisher.
